Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)

If you are employed by a government or not-for-profit organization, you may be able to receive loan forgiveness under the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 (10 years) qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer.

Loans from the Federal Perkins Loan (Perkins Loan) Program programs do not qualify for PSLF, but they may become eligible if you consolidate them into a Direct Consolidation Loan.

Important: If you choose to consolidate your loans, none of the payments you made prior to consolidating will qualify toward PSLF. This means that, if you consolidate.

  • you must make 120 qualifying payments on the new consolidation loan to qualify for PSLF; and
  • you will not be eligible for forgiveness on your new consolidation loan until at least 10 years after you consolidate.
